3D Models

The Bioinspiration Lab has created three-dimensional reconstructions (3DRs) of a range of deep-sea critters, using both lab setups and a deep-sea laser imaging instrument called DeepPIV. Below you can view and download some of those models. Click here to learn more about DeepPIV.

Bathochordaeus stygius (230 m, Monterey Bay)

3DR of a giant larvacean (Bathochordaeus stygius) found in Monterey Bay, CA at a depth of 230 m during the Midwater Ecology cruise in 2015. A new study published in the journal Nature describes a unique laser-based system for constructing 3D models of diaphanous marine animals and the mucus structures they secrete. The 3DR model was created by using MBARI’s laser imaging instrument DeepPIV, which was deployed from RV Rachel Carson mounted to ROV MiniROV. Raw video collected by ROV MiniROV can be viewed here, and stabilized DeepPIV footage that was used to generate the 3DR model can be viewed here. The animated model was made in collaboration with the Digital Life Project at UMass Amherst.

STL files of individual elements can be downloaded here: larvacean, inner filterouter structures (units: mm).

Solmissus jellyfish (503 m, Hawaii)

3DR of a jellyfish (Solmissus sp.) found off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, USA at a depth of 503 meters during the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Designing the Future cruise. The 3DR model was created by using MBARI’s laser imaging instrument DeepPIV, which was deployed from RV Falkor mounted to ROV SuBastian. Raw video collected by ROV SuBastian can be viewed here, and stabilized DeepPIV footage that was used to generate the 3DR model can be viewed here

Alatina alata (457 m, Hawaii)

3DR of Alatina alata, a box jellyfish, found off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii at a depth of 457 meters during the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s Designing the Future cruise. The 3DR model was created using MBARI’s laser imaging instrument DeepPIV, which was deployed from RV Falkor mounted to ROV SuBastian. Raw video collected by ROV SuBastian can be viewed here, and stabilized DeepPIV footage that was used to generate the 3DR model can be viewed here.
